For fans of Hans Christian Andersen and the enchanting world of Efteling, big changes are coming to the Fairytale Forest (Sprookjesbos). The park has officially announced a significant renovation project that involves the complete rebuilding of a beloved classic and the introduction of a brand-new 32nd fairytale: The Fairytale Library (Sprookjesbibliotheek).
The Legacy of The Chinese Nightingale
"The Chinese Nightingale" has a long and storied history in Kaatsheuvel. It was one of the original ten fairytales present when the forest first opened in 1952. While that original version was eventually replaced by the Dragon (Draak Lichtgeraakt) in 1979, the current elaborate indoor attraction—designed by the legendary Ton van de Ven—opened its palace doors in 1999.
However, time has taken its toll. Efteling has revealed that the current building is no longer in good condition. Faced with the choice of a simple patch-up or a total transformation, the park chose to honor its roots. Because the "original ten" fairytales are considered the soul of the forest, the Nightingale will be completely rebuilt to ensure it remains for future generations.
What’s New: The Fairytale Library
Perhaps most exciting for visitors is the addition of the Sprookjesbibliotheek (Fairytale Library). This will be the 32nd official fairytale in the forest. According to the sketches released by Efteling designer Jeroen Verheij, this new addition will be located in the same area near the "Siertuin" (Ornamental Garden).
While the Nightingale will return in a "new form," the Fairytale Library promises to be a magical hub that celebrates the art of storytelling itself.
Grand Reopening: The new "Chinese Nightingale" and the "Fairytale Library" are scheduled to open in 2027.
What Happens to the Garden?
Good news for nature lovers: the Siertuin (Ornamental Garden), which has been part of the park since 1952, will remain. The walking paths, the romantic bridge, and the pond with its famous large carp will be preserved and integrated into the updated landscape.
A Magical Transformation
At Themagical.nl, we believe this project perfectly captures the essence of Efteling—balancing the preservation of history with the magic of new technology. By rebuilding the Nightingale and adding the Library, the park ensures that the "soul" of Hans Christian Andersen’s story lives on in a structure built for the next century.
